WSOS Marine Mechanics Programs Gets 'Awesome' Donation

WSOS graduated more than 100 marine mechanics from its well-known, award-winning Skills for Life program. This week,  the new Advanced Marine Mechanics class got a major boost from Yamaha Motors Corp. who donated six engine simulators to the program WSOS operates with several partners. Read More  

OACAA Donates to Whitehall Community

The Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies has partnered with IMPACT Community Action in Franklin County and Whitehall City Schools on financial literacy and other outreach initiatives. Earlier this month, OACAA made a donation to provide bags of food for students leaving Whitehall Schools for Spring Break. OACAA and Local Matters were on hand for the first W.I.S.H.: Whitehall is Safe and Healthy, a health and fitness fair sponsored by the district. The donation provided 100 bags of food including fresh fruits and vegetables. At the event, 75 bags of food were given out. The remaining bags were given to Whitehall United Methodist Church where residents were referred if they need food when schools are closed. Read more about Spring Break hunger 

Ashtabula Agency Plans Unique Fundraiser

The Ashtabula County Community Action Agency will host the Harlem Ambassadors Saturday, April 16. The unique Harlem-style basketball team will pay the Red Hot Safety Forces, a team composed of local police officers from several departments in Ashtabula County. The game will be held at 7 p.m. at Lakeside High School. ACCAA is raising funds to create a true one-stop center for its services in a former church donated to the agency three years ago. Full Story

Congresswoman Sutton Helps Community Action Celebrate Weatherization Success

Ohio’s Community Action Agencies and weatherization providers have used funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of more than 18,000 homes. In celebration of National Energy Awareness Month and Weatherization Day, Congresswoman Betty Sutton joined Lorain County Community Action Agency (LCCAA) for a demonstration of weatherization techniques at the Lorain home of Rosa Kimbrough. Agencies Highlight Weatherization in October

As the cold weather approaches, most families across the country are turning up their thermostats to combat dropping temperatures. For low-income families, however, cranking up the heat is not always an option. Ohio’s Community Action Agencies can help with the Home Weatherization Assistance Program. This program, highlighted during National Energy Awareness Month in October, provides permanent solutions to reduce the energy burden on low-income families by installing cost-effective, energy-efficient materials and services. CAAs Helping Distribute Hardest-Hit Fund

Ohio has been awarded $320 million from the U.S. Department of Treasury's Hardest-Hit Fund to help homeowners avoid foreclosure and Ohio’s Community Action Agencies are among those at the front lines distributing this assistance to families. The Ohio Housing Finance Agency (OHFA) will administer Restoring Stability: A Save the Dream Ohio Initiative, to help an estimated 26,000 families who are at high risk of default or foreclosure. These new resources will help people, especially unemployed homeowners, who haven't been able to use existing foreclosure prevention programs. Read more.
